Who Needs to Treat Dry Mouth and Why?

Our saliva is necessary to neutralize acids and help to prevent against decay (cavities). Minerals in our saliva help to remineralize our teeth and keep them strong. Saliva helps act as a buffer against the acids created when bacterial plaque mixes with the sugars in our food and drinks.

The scientific name for dry mouth is xerostomia and it affects up to 40% of people at some point in their lives. Xerostomia is defined by Wikipedia as a sensation of dry mouth usually associated with decreased function of saliva glands.

If you have a lack of saliva, you absolutely should do something about it. This is not only an annoyance but it could also negatively affect your oral health. When our saliva is compromised, we lack the necessary cleansing action needed to wash away acids and by products produced by bacterial plaque.

These by products contain gases called volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) and are the main cause of bad breath. When we have a decrease in saliva, these smelly gases are produced and are not adequately washed away. Please refer to an article in the Journal of Natural Science, Biology and Medicine to learn more about volatile sulfur compounds role in bad breath.

By using Xylimelts, you can manage and treat the symptoms of dry mouth. If you have mild or even severe issues with dry mouth, this product is a game changer. Let me explain what Xylimelts are and how they work….

Xylimelts Explained

Along with remedies such as increased water consumption, Xylimelts can be added to your arsenal to provide relief from your reduced saliva flow. It is a saliva stimulant and is a great choice for those people looking for an all-natural solution for dry mouth.

Xylimelts are small discs containing 550 mg of xylitol that are adhered to the inside of the mouth. Xylitol is found in plants and is a natural food substance and has many benefits for the oral cavity. You can read a related article to learn more about the importance of xylitol for the oral cavity.

A major benefit of xylitol in Xylimelts is its ability to stimulate saliva for 4-6 hours at night and 1-2 hours during. This feature makes this product ideal for use during the night-time hours when dry mouth is at its worst. At night, our natural stimulation of saliva is compromised. This is due to the fact that we are not eating, drinking or talking at this time, all things that naturally stimulate our saliva.Man drinking water for dry mouth

The small, oral adhering Xylimelt discs do not contain any artificial preservatives, flavors or dyes and are made without the use of animal products. They are GMO free, gluten free, sugar free and 100% natural. Over a period of 6 hours, the Xylimelt disc will release soothing lubricants that moisturize the mouth in addition to xylitol. Because Xylimelts release xylitol over time, they are especially helpful for reducing the risk of decay. This product comes in a mint or mint-free version.

These are the ingredients per disc that Xylimelts contain: .55g xylitol, acacia gum, cellulose gum, hydroxypropylcellulose, natural mint flavor (without for the mint-free version), magnesium stearate, calcium carbonate.

Dental professionals recommend taking measures to increase saliva flow. Our saliva is anti-bacterial, anti-viral and contains minerals (phosphorus and calcium) to help remineralize beginning areas of decay and strengthen the enamel. Dr. Gordon Christensen Clinicians Report discusses additional reasons for xerostomia and ways dental professionals suggest managing this condition.

So, When and How Are They Used?

Xylimelts have an adhering disc technology. This means that once the disc comes in contact with saliva in your mouth, it forms a self-sticking surface which will securely stay in place. You can discreetly wear a Xylimelt disc any time during the day or night whenever you are affected by dry mouth. During treatment, a high concentration of medicinal-grade xylitol is slowly released over an extended period. This neutralizes acids, freshens breath and stimulates production of your natural saliva.

To use, place the tan side (adhesive side) of the disc against your tissue above an upper molar. The white side should be facing your cheek. You can adjust the disc to a spot that is comfortable. Leave disc in place. A natural adhesion will occur after several seconds and can securely be left in place for up to 6 hours. Some people prefer to use two discs at a time, one on each side of the mouth. However, in my experience, most people find relief by only needing one disc at a time.

There are other home care recommendations by dental professionals for those who experience dry mouth. Because dry mouth puts you at risk for decay and gum disease, meticulous plaque removal is a must. Brushing for a full 2 minutes with an electric toothbrush and using an effective means of cleaning between your teeth will remove the most disease causing bacterial plaque.

An electric toothbrush will give you more brush strokes per minute. In fact, an electric brush will provide you with 30,000-50,000 brush strokes per minute compared to a mere 500 strokes per minute using a manual brush. Oral irrigators are also proven to remove twice as much plaque and food debris from between your teeth versus using dental floss. For those of you who do not like to floss, an interdental brush will be very effective at cleaning between your teeth. By adopting good oral hygiene measures, you can preserve your happy and healthy smile!

Bad breath is very common among those suffering with bad breath. Oral probiotic use has become a promising field of study and has helped many who a plagued by this embarrassing issue. Much like probiotics that are used for gut health, oral probiotics contain certain strains of good bacteria existing in the oral cavity. These good bacteria will crowd out the bad breath causing bad bacteria.

Final Thoughts-

Please consider doing something to treat your dry mouth. As mentioned earlier, you may be setting yourself up for other oral health issues if you do not manage this condition. As a dental professional, I urge you to adopt a better than average approach to maintaining oral health if you suffer from dry mouth symptoms. I encourage you to try Xylimelts. Hi Michelle! I’m glad to hear that adhering Xylimelt discs do not contain any artificial preservatives. But I still have a bit of concern. Can Xylimelt discs be used by everybody? Or do some of us react unfavorably to the presence of it in our mouth since we’re not used to it? Please tell me if you have heard of any experience of this.

      Paolo,

In my experience, I am not aware of issues from the sensation of its presence in the mouth. The area it is recommended to be placed is on the outside of an upper molar. This is a discreet area that is not affected by talking, eating, drinking or swallowing. As with any product, there is a concern of allergic reaction. It is recommended to discontinue use and seek medical help if you have any sign of allergic reaction. The company states: “It is not likely that other drugs you take orally or inject will have an effect on XyliMelts used in the mouth and not swallowed. But many drugs can interact with each other. Tell each of your health care providers about all medicines you use, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.”

      Naksh,

The self adhering disc technology is very helpful during the night when dry mouth is at its worst. Other products available to stimulate saliva will do so only temporarily. This leaves you needing to repeat their use frequently. This product is economical due its long acting method of action.
